Other

West Brom (the team we beat in the play-off finals) were promoted tonight – and spare a quick thought for Southampton…. this time last season we were playing them in the play-offs, they had a strong competitive team (Gareth Bale, Kenwyne Jones, among others)… and now they’re in the bottom three in serious danger of being relegated to League One.

Although you’d be forgiven for thinking ’same old story’, the performance (particularly in the 2nd half) was quite impressive and we looked competative and even the famously un-forgiving national press said so, so it must be true!

At times there are really good signs of improvement and the style of football we’ll be playing next season. Anyway… here’s the aftermat(c)h:

The Morning After The Night Before…

After getting back from the game yesterday, stomping upstairs straight to my computer (stopping only via the fridge to grab a beer) to leave my thoughts – the only piece of information I wish to add is that my “0″ key is starting to wear out. And it ‘aint funny.

Interviews: If 3 interviews saying the same thing is too much for you to take – then let me summarise. Jewell says we started well but fell apart as soon as something went against us , that his team are gutless and found out at every opportunity and some of them just don’t give a damn. Gotta love the honesty.

Next up is West Ham away. They beat us 5-0 at home in October. Mercifully I am on a stag-do on Saturday so I shall at least be “in a prepared state” for the result this time around.

Playing For Pride

Hands up who thought David Jones’ goal at Stamford Bridge was the start of a massive revival? Anyone…? Anyone…? Well I think last night’s result summed up our season. Most Derby fans would agree that games against Chelsea and Manchester United (on Saturday) weren’t going to define our season but in a strange sort of way they have.

They’ve shown how destroyed the teams confidence is and how far away they are from where they need to be. Add that to some terrible luck and you’ve got yourself a bad season.

Don’t get me wrong, we’re not at the bottom of the table on bad luck alone but it’s worth mentioning that, after the Bolton game (January 2nd) which we lost in stoppage time, if games had lasted 88 minutes we’d have been 4th bottom.

That doesn’t always constitute a great season but I’m sure the difference between 4th bottom and bottom, 230 points adrift of anyone isn’t lost on any of you.

In addition to Alan Stubbs limping off last night, existing long term injuries to the squad (Giles Barnes – no return date, Danny Mills – Hip, due back in June, Claude Davis – Knee, due back end of May,
Tyrone Mears – shin injury, due back June), in addition to other long term injuries during the season (just like any other team) and it’s bad news for an already ‘thin’ squad.

The damage was done before Paul Jewell arrived, some of the players were given the opportunity to see if they were good enough, and they’re not. Next season it’s expected that we’ll have a different mentality and a different team but for now we’re looking forward to playing Manchester United on Saturday and playing for pride, which is what all football fans demand, even when losing. Especially when losing.

Remember, there’s always someone worse off…. some of them are living a few miles away in Nottingham ————————————->
